Living in Rio de Janeiro since 1998, São Paulo–born Sandra Guinle began to study Art in 1997 at the Arquitec School in Campinas, where she attended classes in drawing, painting, pottery and art history. A self-taught sculptor, she also took drawing and painting courses at the Visual Arts School, Parque Lage (1998 - 2001).
Born and brought up in Monte Mor, upstate São Paulo, she sought inspiration in her own childhood, in the playful world characteristic of the links between the child, its toys and games, and other children, among fathers, mothers and their children, and among siblings, in order to create the set of 50 ecologically correct hollow bronze sculptures in this Exhibition.
In Children’s Scenes, Sandra relives the games of her small-town childhood, forgotten or even unknown to city-bred youngsters: hopscotch, kites, leapfrog, marbles, carts and ring-a-roses are among the games mirrored in this Exhibition, together with portrayals of the strong links of affection in swinging and spinning parents, children and siblings.
“The purpose of Children’s Scenes is to redeem the child within each of us, bringing the free and unusual childhood that I enjoyed closer to childhood today, with children receiving vast amounts of information that are not always positive, curtailing the most enlightened phase of our lives. Children’s Scenes speaks of a nostalgia that is not just mine, but of all passers-by who are moved by seeing a little of their own history portrayed in each work. In parallel to my art, I converse with the spectator, exchanging feelings and redeeming values,” Sandra explains.
Interactivity is among the key characteristics of the work of Sandra Guinle. Rotating acrylic bases allow the sculptures to be moved, touched and felt: “Extracting lightness, movement and feeling from the hard, cold bronze has always been a challenge for me” says the artist happily, gazing at each work. Nine of the 50 sculptures are four meters high; set on built-in rollers, they enchant the public as a gentle touch sets them spinning delicately.
This Exhibition includes a video installation by Teresa Lampreia (director) and Ricardo Gomes (images), produced by Alvarina Souza e Silva, that shows the creative processes of Sandra Guinle, from modeling the pieces through to casting them in bronze, featuring statements by the artist and poetic images of a childhood that is increasingly remote from today’s world. Chorus of the song “ Roda Viva” written and sung by Chico Buarque. Soundtrack by Arp.x Studio.
In addition to charcoal sketches, this Exhibition includes ten touch-panels with high-relief drawings for the visually challenged as well as Braille explanations of the subject of each work.
Two of the most important segments of this Project are the free Workshops and Guided Tours for children over five years old, coordinated by art educator. The main targets of these Workshops are government school students and children with special needs. The intention of the artist is to provide these children with access to art, strengthening her links of respect and affection with them. |
